About BKS Iyengar

BKS Iyengar, Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar (14 December 1918 – 20 August 2014), affectionately known as Guruji, is considered one of the foremost yoga teachers in the world.  His studies began at the age of 8, with his teacher, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya.

BKS Iyengar is know for creating props (or “aids”) to yoga postures, to find optimal balance, firmness and flexibility and to make Yoga accessible to all bodies willing to try. When in a yogic state of alignment, we are able to refine our awareness in present  moment and to penetrate into deeper layers to soul or Self.

Iyengar Yoga  is a refined art and science and teaches us to be in the  body to receive the many rewards: physically, emotionally,  mentally and spiritually. With emphasis on alignment in the body we gain  knowledge beyond the academic and into the inner and outer realms of  our world. Iyengar Yoga reminds us to seek to understand ourselves and,  therefore, humanity, on a compassionate level.

BKS Iyengar dedicated his life and immersed himself into Yoga. He spread yogic knowledge beyond all boundaries and into the world, for all to learn and explore; to create a more present and complete sense of existence.
